Reflections On A Wasted Day
I got in a fight today - with someone I didn't want to fight.
I fought about church - there's nothing new in that. I felt like I fought to be heard and understood. I fought because what I said mattered, and it seemed that this person (who matters to me also) didn't find it relevant.
I fought because I don't find church relevant.
I haven't been challenged by a sermon for nine years. Wait. I take that back - I remember three sermons in the last nine years that made me think.
For nine years I gave up on sermons. I decided that they didn't need to challenge me - it's quite clear that sermons help some people. If they help some people that's good enough for me.
The only thing is that they help the same people - in the same way - for nine years.
Which means they're not really helping.
This is my notice to all you folks from my old church - since you never even bothered to ask, I'll post it here.
Were you the person who was too busy with yourself and your stuff to show up? If you had shown up and stood by me, I'd still be there.
Were you the person who wanted me to be you? Too damn bad, I wasn't - but lucky for you, I left, so you now you can have church with all your selves and not be disturbed by me-that's-not-you.
Were you the poor man who tried to manipulate me but did it so badly that I was not left angry, but embarrassed for you? I left out of kindness - so you wouldn't have to see me roll my eyes.
Were you the married guy who was too damn worried about your reputation and what your wife would think to go on and be my friend, even though we got along great? Well, I'm glad she's still giving you sex.
Were the married guy's wife? If you weren't so boring - if you could talk about more than your offspring - I might have been your friend too.
To all of you, I hope you don't miss me too much.
To you with whom I fought today - I'm glad you have the guts to fight.

Comments:
It strikes me that the church doesn't take seriously her liturgical task, which includes helping her members be what they are called to be.
