I Could Run The World

I have a couple of really great posts...I just have to write them...

So since I haven't, I do have a couple of interesting things to throw out there.

First, if you have ever been to Starbucks and ordered a "Frappacino" then you have likely seen the waste. You know what I'm talking about? They blend up the ice and the mix and flavors into this nicely creamy, icy drink. Then they pour it in your cup, but there is a WHOLE BUNCH more in the blender that they throw away!

I mean a lot.

I mean anywhere from another third to another half of your cup.

Let us pause here for a moment. I would like to assure you of my motivation. I am not complaining about the size of my drink. I get a "grande" - and that's all I want. I'm also not complaining about throwing things away. I'm not the girl who - like my coworker - must gulp down my softdrinks at resteraunts so I "get my money's worth." If I see the price of a product and want it, I buy it. I drink as much as I want and no more. I am not motivated to war with the resteraunt to take it for all it's worth so it doesn't do the same to me.

I am simply having a problem comprehending why we make so much that we don't want.

How many frappacinos sell in the US in one day? And we throw approximately 1/3 of that amount away? I don't understand the problem. Why couldn't we just decrees the amount of stuff we put in the blender?

This is question I put to my Starbuck girls. Why? Why are you doing this? Why not just make less?

The answer?

"We don't know."

They have no idea. They do this all day long and have no clue as to why they are doing this. The manager doesn't. The girls don't.

Nobody knows.

Now, at a younger age, I would have quickly concluded that this was some sinister conspiracy to take the unthinking public for a ride.

I'm older now.

And I know why.

The reason Starbucks throws away all that frappacino mix is because the "management" (who has never made a cup of coffee in their lives) decided how much mix to put in the blender and the people who make the coffee never ask questions - "just give me a paycheck." And thus we have the most common situation in the workplace today.

The people who make the decisions don't know anything and the people who do the work don't care.

I should have been a business major. I could run the world.
