Dear Us,
I've thought about continuing my political expose, but it would take too long and besides, I can't answer all your challenges along the way. I'd have to write a post for every challenge - I'd rather just chat in person...
What I was trying to get to though, was this. I'm sad and frustrated at how evil this election has become. I'm sorry to hear people calling John Kerry the anti-christ. I'm sorry to hear people calling President Bush the anti-christ. Neither is true, and we need to stop - stop being pawns of a political power war.
John Kerry served in the military in a terrible "war" - and he received medals for his bravery. I don't know how - I haven't checked all the stories and something tells me that even if I did, I would hear a million different ones. The point is that the military doesn't hand out medals like dog treats. Maybe Kerry cheated to get every medal, but I doubt that's really what happened.
He also has been a senator for 20 something years. So you say he doesn't show up for many votes? First, I guarantee that the Democrats would NOT stand for any senator, who by absentee-ism let their treasured Democrat sponsored bills fail. He showed up for the ones that had a shot at passing - he came when it counted - or else he wouldn't be a senator. The actually voting is a formality. The votes have been counted and recounted a million times before the day of a vote. Maybe you don't like that - maybe you still think Kerry should have been there - that's fine, you're allowed to think that. But it's not completely unreasonable to conceive of a reality where you choose not to do things that don't make a difference.
I don't know what Kerry thinks or feels. I don't know what Teresa thinks or feels. I don't know what convictions they really have. I don't know what their "faith" means to them. I can see actions. I can hear words. I can look at records. I can guess.
But I will tell you this, when Kerry stood up in the Presidential Debates and made his case - particularly in defense of his "flip-flopping," I was proud him. He did a good job.
He's not the anti-christ.
And I feel a little sorry for him. Do you think he knows that he's just filling in the blank before Hillary? Can he feel the half-hearted support of the Democratic Party? Can he feel it when they sabotage him?
I'm sorry John Kerry. Thank you for your service to us - your people - your country. Thank you for trying. May you know and live the great things of life...for the rest of your life.
And as for the President...let's all say it together, "He's not stupid." He's not. He went to Yale. I don't know how he did it, maybe his daddy paid everyone off, but I hear that Yale doesn't really hand out diplomas like dog treats.
How many of us have a degree from Yale? How many of us have run businesses? How many of us have run the state of Texas?
He was pegged as stupid during the first campaign. He never had that reputation in Texas. Perhaps if you heard me talk, you'd think I was stupid? Perhaps if you heard my dad say something with some passion, you'd think he was stupid? Perhaps if watched the mannerisms of the people that I come from, you'd call us stupid?
And he didn't lie to us about the WMD's. The whole world thought they were there.
And the UN is a dead dog. You know it is. Everything we humans touch - even with the best of intentions - will be corrupted. So you're crying over our long lost allies? The ones who were blocking and dawdling for twelve years while Saddam had his way, you miss them? Would you miss them even more if you knew they were making a BUNCH of money contracting illegally with Iraq?
I'm not saying the US is beyond corruption, I'm not. But Europe sucks too. They do. And they were not being altruistic and clear-thinking when they wouldn't take care of Iraq and Saddam's blatent disregard for the terms of the ceasefire. They were protecting their interests.
And if Bush said "screw you" to Europe, it doesn't equate to "screw human rights!" "screw morality!" "screw peace!" "screw people with brown skin!"
Europe does not equal "The Moral Highground."
So, Mr. President I pray for you. I know you are human. I know you are fallen. I know you will make and have made mistakes. And the weight of mistakes is more than the weight of mine. Your miscalculation can take many lives. Mine can only wound. That is the burden of your position. You say you pray too, and so I give you to God. May the High God truly be your God.
And may you lead well these next four years.
And to us? And to the church? It is time to stop. Stop with the Religious Right and Redeem the Vote. Stop with the angry Left-wing Christians who think everyone who is conservative is stupid.
It is time to STOP being pawns of political power struggles.
